Quick answer
Women made up most of the volunteers in several NMN trials, including 22 of 30 in one 12-week trial of 250 mg a day, and in a 14-day trial the rise in blood NAD+ did not depend on sex. Europe's safety review excludes pregnancy and breastfeeding, and no benefit specific to women has been shown.1,2,3
Key facts
- In 36 adults, 22 of them women, 250 mg a day for 12 weeks left estradiol, progesterone and testosterone unchanged compared with placebo.4
- The only trial limited to women enrolled 25 women past menopause.5
- About two thirds of the 108 adults in their 70s in the timing trial were women.6
- In female rats, the highest dose in a 90-day study lowered ovary weight.3
How many women took part
Women made up most of the volunteers in several trials: 22 of 30 in one 12-week trial, 22 of 36 in another, and 47 of 80 in a 60-day trial.1,4,7
| Who took part | Women | Amount and length |
|---|---|---|
| Healthy adults aged 20 to 65 | 22 of 30 | 250 mg a day, 12 weeks |
| Healthy adults aged 40 to 59 | 22 of 36 | 250 mg a day, 12 weeks |
| Healthy adults aged 40 to 65 | 47 of 80 | 300 to 900 mg a day, 60 days |
| Healthy adults aged 20 to 65 | 17 of 31 | 1,250 mg a day, 4 weeks |
| Adults in their 70s | 73 of 108 | 250 mg a day, 12 weeks |
| Overweight women past menopause | 25 of 25 | 250 mg a day, 10 weeks |
So most of what is known about NMN in people comes from mixed groups in which women were well represented. A few trials enrolled only men, among them a 12-week trial of 42 men over 65.8,9
What trials found in women
Raises NAD+ levels in the blood*3,7,10
Moderate evidence
A meta-analysis of 12 randomized trials (513 adults) found that NMN raised blood NAD+, and a 60-day trial in 80 healthy adults aged 40 to 65 found increases at 300, 600 and 900 mg a day. The trials were small and short, several were funded by NMN makers, all carried some risk of bias, and the same meta-analysis found that most health outcomes were no different from placebo.
Amount studied: 250 to 900 mg a day, for up to 12 weeks
In a 14-day trial in adults aged 55 to 80, changes in blood NMN and NAD+ were not related to sex, body mass index or age.2
In a 10-week trial in 25 women past menopause, 250 mg a day made muscle respond better to insulin, but body weight, body fat, blood pressure, blood sugar, blood fats, muscle strength and muscle NAD+ did not change. The women were not a healthy group, so the result may not apply to everyone.5
That trial was the only one limited to women. Its main finding came from a specialized lab test in 25 people over 10 weeks, and the everyday measures it checked, such as weight, body fat and strength, did not change.5
Women over 50
In trials of adults over 60, NMN did not change grip strength, walking speed or muscle mass; nearly all of these trials used 250 mg a day.11
In the timing trial of 108 adults in their 70s, 73 were women. The changes linked to NMN there were limited to a chair-stand test and drowsiness scores, and the placebo groups changed on some measures too.6
Hormones
In a 12-week trial of 36 adults, 22 of them women, 250 mg a day did not change testosterone, progesterone or estradiol compared with placebo.4
Hormone levels were a safety check in that trial, not its goal. We found no trial designed to test NMN for menopause, skin or hair.4
What's in ours
What’s in ours
- NMN: β-Nicotinamide Mononucleotide, 500 mg per serving, from the label
Pregnancy, breastfeeding and trying to conceive
Trials enrolled women who were not pregnant or breastfeeding, and Europe's safety assessment does not cover pregnancy or breastfeeding.1,3,4,7
In a 90-day rat study, the highest dose changed the weight of reproductive organs, including a lower ovary weight in females. Europe's assessors set the no-effect level at the dose below it and judged the margin to 300 mg a day in people sufficient.3
Women in the trials had to avoid pregnancy, so there is no human data on NMN in pregnancy. Ask your doctor before taking NMN if you are pregnant, trying to conceive or breastfeeding.1,7
Who should ask first
Questions people ask
Is NMN good for women over 50?
Trials in adults over 60 found that NMN raises blood NAD+ but did not show consistent changes in strength, walking speed or muscle mass. In the largest trial in this age group that we read, about two thirds of the volunteers were women.6,8,11
Does NMN affect estrogen?
In the one trial that measured it, 250 mg a day for 12 weeks did not change estradiol or progesterone compared with placebo.4
