Quick answer
No official guidance gives women a different amount of inulin. The women's trials we can use measured absorption: in 15 postmenopausal women, 6 weeks of oligofructose-enriched inulin raised calcium and magnesium absorption, while about 20 g a day did not change iron absorption in 32 women with low iron stores.1,2
Key facts
- In the 15 postmenopausal women, about two in three absorbed more calcium on inulin, and the responders had lower spine bone density at the start.1
- In 32 women with low iron stores, about 20 g of inulin a day for 4 weeks did not change iron absorption.2
- Trials that reported who took part had about as many women as men: 15 of 30 people in one bacteria trial and 33 of 66 in another.3,4
- A 2021 review of trials found prebiotic and probiotic products safe in pregnancy and breastfeeding, with no serious concerns for mother or infant.5
- The levothyroxine label says dietary fiber may reduce how much of the medicine is absorbed.6
Is there an inulin made for women?
We found no official recommendation, and no study that compared women with men and found they needed a different amount. Inulin sold to women is the same fiber as inulin sold to anyone, so it is judged the same way: the plant it comes from, the grams in a serving and the chain length.7,8
On a US label the Daily Value for dietary fiber is 28 g a day, and inulin may be counted in that line. It is a label benchmark for everyone, not a target set for women.9,10
The trials of gut bacteria and bowel habits that we read enrolled women and men together, and their abstracts do not report results by sex, so we have no separate numbers to give you.3,4,7
Calcium absorption after menopause
The one graded result with a trial in women is for calcium. The graded claim is below, with the studies behind it.1,11
Helps the body absorb calcium from food*1,11,12
Moderate evidence
FDA's 2018 science review found nine human studies of calcium absorption with inulin-type fructans that it could draw conclusions from, and six found more calcium absorbed. In the longest, 98 adolescents took 8 g a day of chicory inulin mixed with oligofructose or a placebo for a year: the inulin group absorbed about 8.5 percentage points more of its calcium at 8 weeks and 5.9 points more at one year, and gained more whole-body bone mineral. A 6 week crossover trial in 15 postmenopausal women at 10 g a day found more calcium and magnesium absorbed. Most studies were small, and oligofructose on its own did not raise absorption in one of them. FDA relied on this evidence to count inulin as dietary fiber.
Amount studied: 8 to 10 g a day of chicory inulin mixed with oligofructose, for 6 weeks to 1 year
In the trial in postmenopausal women, about two in three absorbed more calcium on inulin, and those who did had lower spine bone density at the start.1
That trial was a small crossover study that lasted 6 weeks and measured how much calcium and magnesium the body absorbed. It did not follow women long enough to show what happens to bones, so read the result as absorption only.1
Iron absorption
In 32 women with low iron stores, about 20 g of inulin a day for 4 weeks did not change iron absorption, although it raised bifidobacteria and lowered stool pH.2
In that trial inulin neither raised nor lowered the iron the women absorbed, even though it changed their gut bacteria and made their stool more acidic. So a fiber that ferments in the large intestine is not a way to raise iron absorption, on the evidence we read.2
Research we do not turn into claims
Many of the other trials of inulin that enrolled only women tested it in women who already had a named health problem, or measured outcomes this site does not cover. Those results belong to the women studied, so we leave them out rather than present them as reasons for other women to take inulin.7
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
A 2021 review of trials found prebiotic and probiotic products safe in pregnancy and breastfeeding, with no serious concerns for mother or infant.5
That review pooled many different products and was not designed to find rare problems, and it did not test inulin on its own at a set amount. Ask your doctor or midwife before adding a supplement while you are pregnant or nursing, and bring the label.5
Medicines and conditions to mention first
Ask your pharmacist or doctor first
The levothyroxine label says dietary fiber may bind levothyroxine and lower how much is absorbed. Inulin counts as dietary fiber on US labels, although the levothyroxine label does not name it.6,10
On the medicine's label
If you take levothyroxine or another thyroid hormone, ask your pharmacist before adding any fiber supplement, including inulin, and let them see the label.6
In people with irritable bowel syndrome, a 2019 meta-analysis found that inulin-type fructans made flatulence worse. If you have it or a similar long-term bowel condition, ask your doctor first.13
Questions people ask
Does inulin affect calcium absorption in women?
In a trial of 15 postmenopausal women, 6 weeks of oligofructose-enriched inulin raised calcium and magnesium absorption, and about two thirds of the women responded. It was a small study that measured absorption, not bone strength.1
Should women take a different amount of inulin than men?
We found no source that says so. The trials used the same daily amounts for everyone, from 3 to 20 g a day, and their abstracts do not report results by sex.7,14
Does inulin change how much iron I absorb?
Not in the trial we read: about 20 g a day for 4 weeks did not change iron absorption in women with low iron stores.2
Can I take inulin while pregnant or breastfeeding?
A 2021 review found prebiotic and probiotic products safe in pregnancy and breastfeeding, but it did not test inulin alone. Ask your doctor or midwife first.5
