Quick answer
Riboflavin is absorbed within hours: in healthy adults its absorption half-life was 1.1 hours, and absorption was 95% complete in about 4.4 hours. Raising low body levels takes weeks. In a trial of young women with low status, 2 or 4 mg a day raised their status within 8 weeks.1,2,3
Key facts
- The most riboflavin absorbed from a single dose in healthy adults was about 27 mg.1
- Urine carries about half of the riboflavin the body clears from the blood.1
- On a very low intake of 0.5 mg a day, riboflavin in red blood cells fell clearly within 45 days.2
- Earlier changes from low riboflavin reverse easily, but later ones rarely do.4
Hours: absorption
In healthy adults, riboflavin taken by mouth had an absorption half-life of 1.1 hours, and absorption from the gut was 95% complete within about 4.4 hours.1,2
The study behind those numbers gave 9 healthy adults 20, 40 and 60 mg by mouth and followed their blood and urine for two days. The bright yellow urine many people notice after a B vitamin is riboflavin on its way out: what the body does not keep is filtered into urine.1,4
Days: how long it stays
The body stores only small amounts of riboflavin, in the liver, heart and kidneys.4
Riboflavin in urine responds within a few days when intake drops, because the body keeps little in reserve.2
Because so little is stored, a steady daily intake keeps tissues supplied better than an occasional large dose, most of which passes straight through.2,4
Weeks: raising low status
When men ate only 0.5 mg a day, riboflavin in their red blood cells was clearly lower within 45 days and kept falling over the following months.2
In young women with low status, 2 or 4 mg a day raised riboflavin status within 8 weeks, more with the higher dose.3
Those weeks run in both directions. On a poor diet, stores drain over a month or more, and in the trial a modest daily dose rebuilt status within two months.2,3
When to see a doctor
If you were told your riboflavin is low, or you have signs such as cracked lips, sores at the corners of the mouth or a sore throat, see a doctor. Low riboflavin rarely occurs alone, and the earlier changes it causes reverse easily, while later ones such as cataracts rarely do.4
For migraine, trials of 400 mg a day ran for three months under medical guidance. Whether and how long to try it is a question for your doctor.4,5
