Graded honestly

What the evidence says

A two-capsule daily multivitamin and mineral with 20 listed vitamins and minerals, 18 of them at half the Daily Value or more, plus three small herbal blends whose individual amounts are not disclosed. It can help cover gaps in an uneven diet, and its B vitamins, vitamin C, vitamin D, zinc and selenium have well-established roles in energy metabolism and immune function. Large long-term trials of a different multivitamin did not show that a daily multi helps people live longer, so treat it as nutritional insurance and nothing more.

How it works

Vitamins and minerals are needed in small amounts for routine jobs all over the body: releasing energy from food, making red blood cells, building proteins and keeping the immune system working. A multivitamin does not add anything new to that machinery. It tops up what food supplies, which matters most when a diet is limited or irregular, and does little if you already get enough.

The dose in this product

The label dose is two capsules once a day with a meal. The nutrient-function statements above hold at these amounts, because every vitamin and mineral named in them is present at 50% of the Daily Value or more.

How that compares with the studies

The big long-term trials did not test this formula. Physicians' Health Study II (14,641 male US doctors aged 50 and over, about 11 years) and COSMOS (21,442 US adults aged 60 and over, about 3.6 years) both used Centrum Silver. Neither showed that a daily multivitamin helps people live longer.

Three COSMOS sub-studies with more than 5,000 participants found small improvements on memory and overall cognition tests over two to three years. Those results come from one product with a different formula, tested in adults over 60, and NIH notes that results from one multivitamin cannot be generalized to others, so none of them is carried over to this product. The three blends (Male Support, Immune Support, Antioxidant Fruit and Energy Blend) total 470 mg across 15 ingredients with no individual amounts.

That is too little information to match against any study, so no claim is made for them. For saw palmetto, the best studied of them, NIH's complementary health center concludes that the evidence does not support the uses it is usually sold for.

  • Moderate evidence

Helps fill gaps in vitamin and mineral intake when diet falls short

The NIH Office of Dietary Supplements states that taking a multivitamin and mineral raises nutrient intakes and helps people reach recommended amounts when food alone does not. In a study of 90,771 adults that it cites, about three quarters of men had adequate intakes from food alone and 84% did once a multivitamin was counted. This product supplies 50% or more of the Daily Value for 18 of its 20 listed nutrients; calcium (4%) and magnesium (12%) are token amounts. [1]

  • Moderate evidence

Provides B vitamins that contribute to normal energy-yielding metabolism

Thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, pantothenic acid, vitamin B6, vitamin B12 and biotin are needed by the enzymes that release energy from food; niacin alone is part of a coenzyme used by more than 400 enzymes. 'Contributes to normal energy-yielding metabolism' is the wording European regulators permit for each of these vitamins, and this product supplies more than the Daily Value of each. It does not mean extra B vitamins give more energy to someone who already gets enough. [4][6]

  • Moderate evidence

Provides vitamin C, vitamin D, zinc and selenium, which contribute to normal immune function

Each of these nutrients, along with vitamin A, vitamin B6, vitamin B12, folate and copper, has an established role in the normal working of the immune system, and each carries that permitted wording in the EU list of nutrient-function statements. NIH describes zinc as having a role in immune function. This is about meeting needs. No trial shows that this formula makes people ill less often. [4][7]

Strong evidence: many human trials agree, at the amount in this product. Moderate evidence: human trials mostly agree, but they are small, short or mixed. Early evidence: a few small human studies or lab work. Promising, not proven.

Safety

Who it is for, and who should ask first

Good fit if

  • Adult men who want a basic once-a-day multivitamin and mineral
  • People whose diet is limited, irregular or low in fruit, vegetables and whole grains
  • Adults who do not need extra iron, which includes most men
  • Men over 50, who are advised to get vitamin B12 from supplements or fortified foods

Ask your doctor first if

  • You are pregnant, could become pregnant or are breastfeeding (the formula contains saw palmetto and has no iron or iodine)
  • You are under 18
  • You smoke or used to smoke (the vitamin A in this formula is all beta-carotene)
  • You take warfarin or another blood thinner, or have surgery planned
  • You take any prescription medicine, especially methotrexate, epilepsy medicines, sulfasalazine, penicillamine or antibiotics
  • You have liver disease or have had a reaction to a herbal supplement
  • You have blood tests coming up (biotin can distort some results)
  • You already take other supplements that contain vitamin D, zinc, niacin, vitamin B6 or magnesium

Interactions

  • Quinolone antibiotics (such as ciprofloxacin) and tetracycline antibiotics: zinc can bind them in the gut so that neither is absorbed properly. Take the antibiotic at least 2 hours before or 4 to 6 hours after this product.
  • Penicillamine: zinc can reduce its absorption. Take them at least 1 hour apart.
  • Methotrexate, some epilepsy medicines and sulfasalazine interact with folic acid. Ask your prescriber before taking any folic acid supplement.
  • Warfarin and other blood thinners: this formula contains no vitamin K, but it does contain garlic and other herbs in undisclosed amounts, and garlic supplements may increase bleeding risk. Tell whoever manages your medicine.
  • Laboratory tests: 300 mcg of biotin is ten times the Daily Value. Biotin can cause falsely high or falsely low results on some lab tests, including some thyroid and troponin tests. Tell your doctor or the lab that you take it.
  • The blends include green tea extract, garlic, hawthorn and echinacea in amounts the label does not give. Herbs can interact with medicines, so check with a pharmacist if you take any prescription drug.

Possible side effects

  • Stomach upset or nausea, more likely on an empty stomach. The label says to take it with a meal.
  • Skin flushing (warmth, redness, tingling or itching) is possible if the niacin is in the nicotinic acid form: 30 mg sits at the low end of the range that typically causes it. It is unpleasant rather than harmful and usually passes.
  • Urine may turn a brighter yellow, because riboflavin is yellow and the excess leaves the body in urine.
  • Allergic reactions to the herbal ingredients, such as echinacea or garlic, are uncommon but possible.

Upper limit

No single limit applies to a multivitamin, so each nutrient is checked against the US adult tolerable upper intake levels (National Academies). Niacin 30 mg against a limit of 35 mg. Folic acid 400 mcg against 1,000 mcg.

Zinc 15 mg against 40 mg. Vitamin B6 7.5 mg against 100 mg. Vitamin D 10 mcg against 100 mcg.

Copper 2 mg against 10 mg. Selenium 30 mcg against 400 mcg. Manganese 2 mg against 11 mg.

Supplemental magnesium 50 mg against 350 mg. Nothing is at or above an adult limit; niacin is the closest at 86%. For ages 14 to 18 the niacin limit is 30 mg, which this product equals, one reason it is for adults only.

No upper limit has been set for biotin, vitamin B12, thiamin, riboflavin, pantothenic acid or chromium.

Combining with our other products

Vitamin D: this product has 10 mcg. Vitamin D3 has 50 mcg, the Immune Support product 40 mcg and Ashwagandha Complex 20 mcg. The adult upper limit is 100 mcg a day from all sources, food included.

Men's Multi with Vitamin D3 is 60 mcg. With Immune Support, 50 mcg. With Ashwagandha Complex, 30 mcg.

With Vitamin D3 and Ashwagandha Complex, 80 mcg. With Vitamin D3 and Immune Support, 100 mcg, which is the limit before any food is counted, so do not take those three together. All four together give 120 mcg, over the limit.

Chocolate Plant Protein adds a further 2 mcg per serving. Zinc: 15 mg here plus 11 mg in Immune Support is 26 mg, under the 40 mg limit. Magnesium: 50 mg here plus 275 mg in Magnesium Glycinate is 325 mg; adding Creatine + Electrolytes (60 mg) makes 385 mg, over the 350 mg limit for supplemental magnesium.

Vitamin B6: 7.5 mg here, 2.5 mg in Ashwagandha Complex, 2.5 mg in BCAA 2:1:1 and 1.7 mg in Immune Support come to 14.2 mg, far below the US limit of 100 mg. Echinacea is also in the Immune Support product.

Answers

Questions people ask

Will this give me more energy?

Only if you were running short of something. B vitamins help your body release energy from food, but taking more than you need does not add energy, and no trial shows this formula reduces tiredness. If you feel worn out most days, see a doctor.

Does a daily multivitamin prevent serious illness?

The large trials do not show that. Two long studies of a different multivitamin did not find that it helps people live longer, and their other findings were small or were not repeated. US expert panels say the evidence is not strong enough to recommend multivitamins for this purpose.

I read that multivitamins help memory. Does this one?

Three linked studies in adults over 60 found small gains on memory and thinking tests after two to three years of a daily multivitamin. They all tested one product, Centrum Silver, which has a different formula from this one. This product has not been tested, so we make no memory claim for it.

Why is there no iron or iodine?

Adult men need far less iron than women who menstruate, and multivitamins made for men and older adults often leave it out. Iodine is also missing, which is less usual, along with vitamin K, and there is very little calcium or magnesium. If you need iron or iodine, for example in pregnancy, this is the wrong product.

What do the three herbal blends do?

We make no claims for them. The label lists 15 ingredients in three blends that total 470 mg, without saying how much of each is present, so the amounts cannot be matched to any research. Saw palmetto is the best known of them, and NIH's complementary health center concludes it is probably not helpful for the urinary symptoms it is usually sold for.

Can I take it with Vitamin D3 or Immune Support?

With one of them, yes. With both, no: Men's Multi (10 mcg), Vitamin D3 (50 mcg) and Immune Support (40 mcg) add up to 100 mcg of vitamin D, the adult upper limit, before food is counted. Adding Ashwagandha Complex as well takes the total to 120 mcg, which is over the limit.

Why did my skin feel warm and tingly after taking it?

That is probably a niacin flush. Thirty milligrams of niacin is at the low end of the range that can cause flushing when the niacin is in the nicotinic acid form. It usually fades on its own, and taking the capsules with food helps. See a doctor if it comes with dizziness or a rash.

Are the nutrient forms good ones?

They are standard, low-cost forms. Folic acid and cyanocobalamin (vitamin B12) are the forms used in most supplements and are well absorbed. Zinc and magnesium are supplied as oxides, which are absorbed less well than some alternatives: NIH puts zinc oxide absorption at about 50%, against about 61% for zinc citrate or gluconate. The vitamin E is the synthetic form.
