Quick answer
In trials, gut bacteria changed within 2 weeks of starting 5 to 8 g of inulin a day, bowel habits were measured after 3 to 4 weeks, and calcium absorption was higher at 8 weeks and still higher after a year. Inulin itself is not absorbed, and signs of fermentation peaked 5 to 8 hours after a meal.1,2,3,4
Key facts
- Bifidobacteria rose within 2 weeks of starting 5 to 8 g of inulin a day, and within 21 days in a snack bar trial.1,5
- The bowel trial measured changes after 4 weeks of 12 g a day, when the median went from 3 to 4 bowel movements a week.2
- Calcium absorption was 8.5 percentage points higher at 8 weeks and 5.9 points higher at one year in adolescents taking 8 g a day.3
- Breath hydrogen, a sign that bacteria are fermenting inulin, rose 5 to 8 hours after a meal with agave inulin.4
- We found no study that tracked how fast bifidobacteria fall back after people stop inulin. Crossover trials used 1 week washouts between periods.1,6
Gut bacteria: days to two weeks
Bifidobacteria rose within 2 weeks of starting 5 to 8 g of inulin a day, and within 21 days in a snack bar trial.1,5
In 29 healthy adults, bifidobacteria in stool were 3 times higher on 5 g and 4 times higher on 7.5 g of agave inulin a day than on placebo, in samples taken on days 16 to 20 of a 21 day period.6
A week was not always enough. In a 200 person test of 10 g a day for 7 days, short-chain fructooligosaccharides raised bifidobacteria and long-chain inulin did not, so the type of inulin matters as much as the number of days.7
The first thing trials measured was bacteria in stool samples, and nobody can feel that change. It is a measurement, so a lack of any feeling after two weeks says nothing about whether the bacteria changed.1,8
Bowel habits: three to four weeks
Trials measured changes in bowel habits after 3 to 4 weeks of daily use.2,4
In the trial of 44 healthy adults with infrequent bowel movements, 4 g of chicory inulin three times a day for 4 weeks raised the median from 3 to 4 a week and softened stools. Two of the authors worked for the inulin's maker.2
Waiting longer or taking more did not always change the result. In 97 adults, oligofructose stepped up through 5, 10 and 15 g a day over 4 week phases raised bowel movements significantly only at 15 g, and 20 g a day of chicory inulin for 3 weeks did not change stool weight or transit time in 12 healthy men.9,10
Calcium absorption: weeks to a year
The longest calcium trial gave 8 g a day for a year, and absorption was still higher than with placebo at the one year mark.3,11
The adolescents absorbed 8.5 percentage points more of their calcium at 8 weeks and 5.9 points more at one year, so the gain was already visible by the first check and was smaller but still there at the end. The women's trial lasted 6 weeks and found more calcium and magnesium absorbed by the end.3,12
How long it stays in your system
Gut bacteria ferment inulin in the large intestine. In one trial, breath hydrogen, a sign of that fermentation, rose 5 to 8 hours after a meal containing agave inulin.4
Inulin is not absorbed the way a vitamin is. Human enzymes cannot break it down, so it travels to the large intestine, where bacteria use it up and make short-chain fatty acids and gas.11
We found no study of how long the extra bifidobacteria last once people stop. The crossover trials we read separated the test periods with washouts of 1 week, but that is a design choice, not a measurement of how quickly the bacteria change back.1,6
How long people can keep taking it, and who should ask first
The longest trial we found gave 8 g a day for a year to adolescents, and absorption was still higher than with placebo at the end. Many of the adult trials we read lasted 2 to 4 weeks.3,10,13
We found no official upper limit for inulin. Trials in healthy adults used up to about 20 g a day for 2 to 4 weeks, and gas and other complaints rose with the amount.10,13,14
If you plan to take inulin for months, if gas has not settled after a few weeks, or if you have a long-term bowel condition, ask your doctor. In one small study of short-chain fructans, daily use did not make symptoms any milder than occasional use.15
Questions people ask
Will I feel inulin working?
The first changes measured were in stool bacteria, which nobody can feel. Mild gas was the effect people most often reported in the trials we read.4,5,16
How long does inulin stay in your system?
It is not absorbed. It reaches the large intestine, where bacteria ferment it, and one trial saw breath hydrogen rise 5 to 8 hours after a meal. We found no study of how long gut bacteria stay changed after people stop.4,11
