What the evidence says

Stoke is a four-capsule daily formula with vitamins B6 and C, choline, chromium, inositol and a long list of botanicals, including garcinia, uva ursi, kelp, bladderwrack and grapefruit extract. The only benefits we describe are well-established functions of vitamin B6 and vitamin C. The botanicals are present in small or unstated amounts, far below the doses that were studied, so no claim is made for them. Several of them carry cautions, which are listed below.

How it works

Vitamin B6 works as a coenzyme in more than 100 enzyme reactions, most of them in protein metabolism. It also takes part in carbohydrate and fat metabolism, in releasing stored glycogen, and in making lymphocytes, a type of white blood cell. Vitamin C is needed to make collagen, carnitine and some neurotransmitters, acts as an antioxidant and has a role in immune function. How chromium acts in the body is not settled. European regulators concluded in 2014 that there is no convincing evidence it is an essential nutrient. Garcinia's hydroxycitric acid blocks an enzyme in laboratory studies, but human trials have not shown a consistent effect.

The dose in this product

Four capsules provide vitamin C 60 mg, vitamin B6 25 mg, choline 200 mg and chromium 200 mcg. The three benefits above rest on vitamins B6 and C only.

How that compares with the studies

Vitamin B6 at 25 mg is about 15 times the adult RDA. It is under the US adult upper limit of 100 mg, but above the 12 mg limit European regulators set in 2023, and above the 10 mg level at which Australia requires a warning label. Choline 200 mg is 37% of the Daily Value.

We make no choline claim. Chromium 200 mcg is far above the adult Adequate Intake of 20 to 35 mcg, and its role as a nutrient is disputed, so no chromium claim is made. This product makes no claim about body weight, fat or appetite.

For context only: the garcinia trials used 1,000 to 2,800 mg of hydroxycitric acid a day and found a short-term average change in body weight of 0.88 kg, which was no longer significant in the two best designed trials. This label gives 200 mg of a 50% extract, or about 100 mg of hydroxycitric acid. Chromium trials used 137 to 1,000 mcg a day and found changes of about 0.5 to 1.1 kg, which reviewers called of uncertain or debatable relevance.

CLA trials used 3.2 to 6.4 g a day against 100 mg here. Carnitine trials used 1.8 to 4 g a day against 25 mg here. Gymnema is typically taken at 400 mg three times a day against 25 mg here, and turmeric at 100 mg to more than 1,000 mg a day against 25 mg here.

Inositol 500 mg, MCT oil 70 mg, CoQ10 5 mg and GLA 5 mg: no claim is made. Twelve of the fifteen ingredients in the 631 mg blend have no stated amount, including uva ursi, kelp and grapefruit extract.

  • Moderate evidence

Vitamin B6 and vitamin C contribute to normal energy-yielding metabolism

This is a well-established nutrient function. NIH describes vitamin B6 as a coenzyme in more than 100 enzyme reactions, and EU regulators permit this wording for vitamin B6 and vitamin C in any product that is at least a source of them. Four capsules supply 25 mg of vitamin B6 and 60 mg of vitamin C. The benefit is about getting enough. The B6 needed for it is the RDA of 1.3 to 1.7 mg, and more than that adds nothing known. [1][5]

  • Moderate evidence

Vitamin B6 contributes to normal protein and glycogen metabolism

This is a well-established nutrient function. NIH states that vitamin B6 is involved mostly in protein metabolism and in breaking down stored glycogen, and EU regulators permit this wording for products that are at least a source of vitamin B6. Four capsules supply 25 mg, about 15 times the adult RDA, so the amount is far more than this function needs. [1][5]

  • Moderate evidence

Vitamin C and vitamin B6 contribute to the normal function of the immune system

This is a well-established nutrient function. NIH describes a role for vitamin C in immune function and states that vitamin B6 promotes lymphocyte production, and EU regulators permit this wording for both. Four capsules supply 60 mg of vitamin C, below the adult RDA of 75 to 90 mg, and 25 mg of vitamin B6. It describes a normal function, not protection from illness. [2][1][5]

Strong evidence: many human trials agree, at the amount in this product. Moderate evidence: human trials mostly agree, but they are small, short or mixed. Early evidence: a few small human studies or lab work. Promising, not proven.

Safety

Who it is for, and who should ask first

Do not use if

  • You are pregnant or nursing, or under 18. The supplier's label says the product is not intended for these groups, and European regulators do not recommend uva ursi in pregnancy, nursing or under 18.
  • You have phenylketonuria (PKU). The blend contains L-phenylalanine in an unstated amount.
  • You have a kidney disorder. European regulators list kidney disorders as a reason not to use uva ursi.
  • You have ever had liver injury from a supplement. Garcinia, turmeric and gymnema products have each been linked to rare cases of liver injury, and LiverTox advises against taking garcinia again after a reaction.

Good fit if

  • Adults who want vitamin B6, vitamin C, choline and chromium in one product and have read the cautions below
  • People who take no prescription medicine, or whose doctor or pharmacist has checked this label
  • Not for anyone looking for a weight product. We make no such claim

Ask your doctor first if

  • You take insulin or any diabetes medicine. Chromium and gymnema might lower blood sugar and add to the medicine's effect
  • You have a thyroid condition or take thyroid medicine. Kelp and bladderwrack contain iodine in an unstated amount, and chromium can reduce levothyroxine absorption
  • You take any prescription medicine that carries a grapefruit warning, such as some statins, nifedipine, cyclosporine, buspirone, budesonide or amiodarone. The blend contains grapefruit extract in an unstated amount
  • You take an antidepressant, especially an SSRI. Garcinia was linked to serotonin toxicity in a person taking two SSRIs, and to rare reports of mania
  • You have liver disease or kidney disease. People with these may be more sensitive to high chromium intakes
  • You take seizure medicines such as phenytoin or phenobarbital, or have a seizure disorder. High-dose vitamin B6 can lower phenytoin and phenobarbital levels, and carnitine has rarely been linked to seizures in people with seizure disorders
  • You plan to take it for more than a week. European regulators advise that uva ursi be used for no more than one week at a time
  • You already take other supplements containing vitamin B6 or chromium

Interactions

  • Insulin, metformin and other diabetes medicines: chromium might add to their effect and raise the risk of low blood sugar. Gymnema has blood sugar lowering effects in laboratory and animal studies.
  • Levothyroxine: chromium taken at the same time reduced its absorption in a small study. Take them hours apart and tell your doctor.
  • Antithyroid medicines such as methimazole: extra iodine from kelp and bladderwrack can add to their effect.
  • Medicines affected by grapefruit, such as simvastatin, atorvastatin, nifedipine, cyclosporine, buspirone, budesonide, amiodarone and fexofenadine: grapefruit can change how much of the medicine reaches the blood. The amount of grapefruit extract here is not stated.
  • SSRI antidepressants: garcinia was associated with serotonin toxicity in a person taking two SSRIs.
  • Phenytoin and phenobarbital: vitamin B6 at 200 mg a day lowered their blood levels. Whether 25 mg does is not known.
  • Other supplements with vitamin B6, chromium, green tea extract or other botanicals: see the stacking note.

Possible side effects

  • Nausea, stomach upset, headache, loose or watery stools (reported with garcinia, chromium and CLA)
  • Nausea, vomiting and stomach ache (reported with uva ursi)
  • A fishy body odor (reported with carnitine, and with high choline intakes)
  • Tingling, burning or numbness in the hands or feet. Stop taking the product and see a doctor. This is a known effect of vitamin B6
  • Tiredness, nausea, dark urine or yellowing of the skin or eyes. Stop taking the product and see a doctor at once. These are signs of liver injury, which has been reported rarely with garcinia products

Upper limit

Adult tolerable upper intake levels from food and supplements combined (NIH Office of Dietary Supplements): vitamin B6 100 mg, vitamin C 2,000 mg, choline 3,500 mg and iodine 1,100 mcg. Four capsules provide 25 mg, 60 mg and 200 mg of the first three. The iodine content is not stated.

European regulators set a lower vitamin B6 limit of 12 mg a day in 2023, and this product alone is above it. Australia requires a nerve warning on any product with more than 10 mg of vitamin B6 a day and reports nerve symptoms at doses under 50 mg. No upper limit has been set for chromium.

European regulators advise using uva ursi for no more than one week at a time. Garcinia's long-term safety is unknown because all trials were short.

Combining with our other products

Vitamin B6 is the main thing to add up. Stoke has 25 mg. Men's Multi adds 7.5 mg, Ashwagandha Complex 2.5 mg, BCAA 2:1:1 2.5 mg and Immune Support 1.7 mg.

Stoke with Men's Multi is 32.5 mg a day, and with all five it is 39.2 mg. That is under the US limit of 100 mg but about three times the 12 mg limit set by European regulators, and nerve symptoms have been reported below 50 mg. If you take Stoke, you do not need more vitamin B6 from other products.

Chromium: Stoke (200 mcg) with Men's Multi (120 mcg) is 320 mcg. No upper limit is set, but the supplier's label says to avoid other supplements high in chromium. Vitamin C: with Men's Multi (150 mg) and Immune Support (180 mg) the total is 390 mg, well under the 2,000 mg limit.

CoQ10: Stoke adds only 5 mg to the 200 mg in CoQ10. Men's Multi also contains green tea extract and cassia cinnamon. Green tea extract has its own reports of liver injury, so taking it with Stoke's garcinia, turmeric and gymnema puts several botanicals with rare liver reports together.

Ask your doctor before combining them.

Questions people ask

Is Stoke a fat burner?

We make no claim about body weight, fat or appetite. The supplier sells this formula as 'Fat Burner with MCT', and we renamed it so the name makes no claim. Trials of garcinia, chromium, CLA and carnitine found small or uncertain changes in body weight, at doses far above the amounts in these capsules.

What does Stoke actually do, then?

It supplies vitamin B6 and vitamin C, which the body uses for normal energy-yielding metabolism, normal protein and glycogen metabolism and normal immune function. That is the full extent of what we claim. The other ingredients are present in small or unstated amounts and no claim is made for them.

Is 25 mg of vitamin B6 too much?

It is under the US adult upper limit of 100 mg, but above the 12 mg limit European regulators set in 2023. Australia's regulator has received reports of peripheral neuropathy (tingling, burning or numbness in the hands and feet) at doses under 50 mg, often in people taking more than one product with B6. If you notice those symptoms, stop and see a doctor. Do not add other B6 supplements on top of Stoke.

I heard garcinia can harm the liver. Is that true?

Rarely, yes. LiverTox lists garcinia as a likely rare cause of liver injury, with at least a dozen reports, mostly with multi-ingredient products. Symptoms usually began 1 to 4 weeks after starting, and some cases led to liver failure, transplant or death. Stop at once and see a doctor if you notice tiredness, nausea, dark urine or yellowing of the skin or eyes. Do not take it if you have liver disease without your doctor's advice.

Can I take it every day?

The label directs four capsules a day with no time limit. The blend contains uva ursi leaf, which European regulators advise using for no more than one week at a time because of its hydroquinone content. The amount here is not stated. Talk to your doctor before taking Stoke for longer than a week, and do not take it if you have a kidney disorder.

Does it contain iodine?

Yes, but the amount is not stated. Kelp and bladderwrack are seaweeds, and NIH reports that seaweed iodine varies from 16 to 2,984 mcg per gram. Too much iodine can upset thyroid function, especially in people with autoimmune thyroid disease. If you have a thyroid condition or take thyroid medicine, ask your doctor first.

Can I take it with Men's Multi or Immune Support?

Add up the vitamin B6 first. Stoke has 25 mg, Men's Multi 7.5 mg and Immune Support 1.7 mg, so all three come to 34.2 mg a day. That is under the US limit of 100 mg but well above the European limit of 12 mg. Men's Multi also adds 120 mcg of chromium and green tea extract. Ask your doctor before combining them.

Is it vegetarian?

No. The capsule is made of bovine gelatin. The supplier also says it is made in a facility that may process milk, soy, wheat, egg, peanuts, tree nuts, fish and shellfish.
