Quick answer
In sleep studies, GABA was taken 30 to 60 minutes before bed, every night for one to four weeks. In stress studies, one dose of 20 to 100 mg was taken shortly before a demanding task. No study compared morning with evening use, or taking it with and without food.1,2
Key facts
- The largest sleep trial gave 300 mg one hour before bed.2
- A smaller sleep study gave 100 mg 30 minutes before bed.1
- In a 12-week training trial, GABA was taken within 15 minutes after exercise, or before sleep on rest days.3
- In the absorption study, 2 g tablets were taken before meals.4
For sleep: shortly before bed
In the sleep studies, GABA was taken every night, 30 minutes to an hour before bed.1,2
That timing follows how GABA behaves in the body. Blood levels rise within half an hour and are already falling an hour later, so the studies gave it close to lights out. The review that graded the evidence found that the changes were in falling asleep and early sleep, which fits that short window.1,5
The sleep studies used GABA every night. None tested an occasional dose taken only on a night when sleep feels hard to come by.1
Before a stressful task
In most of the stress studies, a single dose was taken shortly before a set mental task, and changes were measured over the following hour.1,6
The tasks were short and chosen by the researchers, such as timed arithmetic, so the studies say little about taking GABA to get through a long working day. The doses were 20 to 100 mg, often in a capsule and sometimes in chocolate, coffee or a drink.1,6
Around exercise
The one lean mass trial gave 100 mg of GABA with 10 g of whey within 15 minutes after a workout, and before sleep on days without training. Strength gains were the same with and without GABA, so there is no result yet that ties a workout time to an effect.3
With or without food
No study compared GABA taken with food and without it. In the absorption study, the 2 g tablets were taken before meals, and the largest sleep trial gave its tablets an hour before sleep without mentioning meals.2,4
Some studies used foods enriched with GABA, such as germinated rice, oolong tea, chocolate or fermented milk, instead of capsules.1,7
Daytime use and driving
Drowsiness was uncommon in the four-week sleep trial, reported by 1 of 30 people on GABA and 1 of 10 on placebo. If you take GABA during the day and feel drowsy, do not drive or use machinery. If you already take a sleep medicine or sedative at night, ask your pharmacist before adding GABA.2
Questions people ask
Should I take GABA in the morning or at night?
That depends on why you take it. The sleep studies used it at night, and the stress studies used it shortly before a task during the day. No study compared the two.1
