Quick answer
There is no set daily amount for GABA. Sleep studies used 100 to 300 mg taken 30 to 60 minutes before bed, stress studies used single doses of 20 to 100 mg, and hormone research went as high as 3 g at once. No study has pinned down a best dose.1,2,3
Key facts
- The largest sleep trial gave 300 mg an hour before bed for four weeks.2
- Foods enriched with GABA supplied about 2 to 30 mg a serving in studies.1
- A week of 2 g three times a day brought more minor complaints than a single 2 g dose.4
- The longest daily trials we found ran 90 and 95 days, at 200 mg and 1.5 g a day.5,6
Every amount tested in people
| What was studied | Amount | How long |
|---|---|---|
| Foods enriched with GABA | About 2 to 30 mg a serving | One serving to 8 weeks |
| Stress during set mental tasks | 20 to 100 mg | Usually one dose |
| Sleep | 100 to 300 mg before bed | 1 to 4 weeks |
| Resistance training in men | 100 mg with 10 g of whey | 12 weeks |
| Exercise program in women | 200 mg | 90 days |
| Adults aged 50 to 70, metabolic measures | 500 mg three times a day | 95 days |
| Absorption and hormones | 2 g once or three times a day, or 3 g once | One dose to 1 week |
The spread is wide because the studies asked different questions. Foods were tested for everyday use, single capsules for short stressful tasks, nightly doses for sleep, and gram doses to see how the body handles GABA and how hormones respond.1,4
The sleep amounts
May help you fall asleep a little faster when taken nightly for one to four weeks*1,2,6,8
Early evidence
Three small studies measured sleep with overnight brain-wave recordings. In the largest, 40 adults who reported poor sleep took 300 mg of GABA from fermented rice germ or a placebo an hour before bed for four weeks; time to fall asleep dropped from about 13 to 6 minutes with GABA and did not change with placebo, though questionnaire scores did not differ between the groups. A one-week study of 10 people found faster sleep onset with 100 mg taken 30 minutes before bed, and a similar study of 16 found only a trend. A 95-day trial of 1.5 g a day in 52 adults aged 50 to 70 found no change in self-rated sleep. A 2020 systematic review rated the evidence for sleep as very limited, and one of the recording studies was run by a GABA maker.
Amount studied: 100 to 300 mg a day, taken 30 to 60 minutes before bed, for one to four weeks
The 300 mg in the largest trial was chosen because the same team had found, in an earlier study, that it did better than 150 mg on sleep questionnaires. The tablets were taken an hour before sleep. Nothing so far suggests that going above 300 mg adds anything for sleep: at 1.5 g a day, self-rated sleep did not change.2,6
The stress amounts
Stress studies gave 20 to 100 mg once, usually shortly before a set mental task, and took their measurements over the next hour. The 2020 review found that amounts up to about 30 mg seemed to act on heart rate and hormone markers, while 100 mg was the dose linked to changes in brain-wave measures.1
Some of the lowest amounts came in food and drink: GABA-enriched tea, rice, coffee and chocolate. Other compounds in those foods may also play a part, the review noted, so their results do not translate neatly into a capsule dose.1
Is more better?
No study has shown that a bigger dose works better for sleep or stress. What does rise with the dose is side effects: in the absorption study, 2 g three times a day for a week brought more minor complaints, such as sore throat and dizziness, than a single 2 g dose.4
We found no official upper limit for GABA, and FDA has not finished evaluating it as a food ingredient. The largest amounts in the studies we read were a single 3 g dose and 2 g three times a day for one week, which brought only minor complaints.3,4,9
Our Sleep formula's amount
What’s in ours
- Sleep: GABA, 100 mg per serving, from the label
Its 100 mg per serving sits at the low end of the sleep studies and the top of the stress studies. Those trials tested GABA on its own, while the formula combines it with melatonin and herbs, so they cannot say what the mix does.1
Before you take it
- Ask your pharmacist first if you take a sedative, a sleep medicine, or medicine for blood pressure or seizures.
- Ask your doctor first if you are pregnant, nursing or under 18. The studies in the table were all in adults.1
Questions people ask
How many mg of GABA should I take for sleep?
The sleep studies used 100 to 300 mg, 30 to 60 minutes before bed, every night for one to four weeks. That is what was tested, not a recommendation, and the evidence behind it is early.1,2
