Quick answer
No study has compared morning and evening doses of elderberry, or taking it with or without food. Its anthocyanins are short-lived: in small studies they had a half-life of about 2 hours and were mostly cleared within 4 to 7 hours. Trials split the daily amount into two to four doses.1,2,3,4
Key facts
- In six healthy volunteers, elderberry anthocyanins had a half-life of about 1.7 hours.2
- Anthocyanins did not build up in the blood over 12 weeks of daily intake.5
- The 12-week trial gave two capsules twice a day.5
- One capsule trial began 10 days before a long flight and continued until 4 to 5 days after arrival.6
How trials timed their doses
Trials split elderberry across the day: capsules two or three times a day, syrup or lozenges up to four times a day, and in the 12-week trial two capsules twice a day.4,5
| Form | Times a day | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Capsules, 300 mg each | 2 to 3 | Started 10 days before air travel |
| Syrup, 15 mL | 2 to 4 | Twice a day for children aged 5 to 12, four times for others |
| Lozenges, 175 mg each | 4 | For 2 days |
| Capsules of an anthocyanin-rich extract | 2 capsules, twice a day | For 12 weeks |
| Capsules of spray-dried juice, 400 mg each | 3 | For 2 weeks |
Nobody has compared these schedules head to head. They show what researchers chose, not what works best.
How long it lasts in the body
In six healthy volunteers, elderberry anthocyanins had a half-life of about 1.9 to 2.6 hours, and less than 0.4% passed unchanged into urine within 7 hours.1
In one study, most of the elderberry anthocyanins that were passed in urine came out within about 4 hours of the dose.3
After 12 weeks of daily intake, anthocyanins did not build up in the blood of the women in the 12-week trial.5
In the 12-week trial, blood was sampled 1, 2 and 3 hours after a 500 mg dose of anthocyanins, and breakdown products, not the anthocyanins themselves, made up most of what was found.5,8
With or without food
We found no elderberry study that compared taking it with a meal or on an empty stomach. The absorption studies gave single doses to healthy volunteers, and the 12-week trial drew its blood samples after an overnight fast.1,5
Our product's label says to take two capsules a day with water and does not name a time of day.
Morning or night
No elderberry trial measured sleep or alertness after an evening dose, and none compared times of day.4,5

Timing and medicines
Ask your pharmacist or doctor first
Because elderberry may stimulate the immune system, NIH says it might reduce the effect of medicines that suppress the immune system.6,9
Expected from how the two work, not shown in studies
Spacing doses apart does not remove that concern. If you take an immune-suppressing medicine, or any prescription medicine, ask your pharmacist before adding elderberry at any time of day.6,10
Questions people ask
Should I take elderberry in the morning or at night?
No study compared the two. Trials split doses through the day, two to four times, and the 12-week trial used two capsules twice a day.4,5
Should I take elderberry with food?
No elderberry study compared taking it with or without a meal. Follow the directions on your product's label.
Does elderberry build up in the body?
Not in the one trial that checked. After 12 weeks of daily intake, anthocyanins did not accumulate in the blood of the women taking it.5
