Quick answer
We found no study comparing morning and evening doses of chromium, so there is no proven best time of day. Some trials split the daily amount between meals, such as 200 mcg at breakfast and 100 mcg at dinner. If you take levothyroxine, ask your pharmacist how to time the two.1,2
Key facts
- Vitamin C and aspirin raise chromium absorption; antacids and oxalate lower it.1
- In a small study, chromium picolinate taken together with levothyroxine cut the amount of levothyroxine absorbed over 6 hours.1,3
- In one absorption study, each 200 mcg dose was taken with a small standardized meal.4
- Urine chromium tracks what was taken in recently, not what the body has stored.1
Morning or night?
Neither has an edge in the research we reviewed. The trials NIH describes chose a schedule and stuck to it, once or twice a day, without testing one clock time against another.1
Some trials split the daily amount between meals. One 24-week trial gave 200 mcg with breakfast and 100 mcg with dinner, and others gave chromium twice a day.1
With no evidence either way, the practical choice is a time you will keep to, in line with the label of the product you use.
With food, and what else is in the meal
Vitamin C and prostaglandin inhibitors such as aspirin increase how much chromium is absorbed, while antacids and oxalate reduce it.1
Oxalate is plentiful in spinach, collard greens, sweet potatoes, rhubarb and beans. Because NIH also lists antacids as reducing chromium absorption, taking chromium at a different time from an antacid avoids that clash, though no study has measured how much difference it makes.1,5
In a small crossover study, college-aged women took 200 mcg of chromium in four forms with a small meal. Picolinate raised 24-hour urinary chromium more than two nicotinate products or the chloride in a multivitamin, an indirect sign of better short-term absorption.4
What happens after a dose
Chromium leaves the body mainly in urine, so urine levels reflect recent intake rather than what the body has stored. Hair levels might reflect past intake.1
In a 12-week study of men aged 56 to 69 taking 924 mcg a day as picolinate, urinary chromium rose about 50-fold.6
Medicines that change the timing
Ask your pharmacist how far apart to take them
In a small study of seven volunteers, chromium picolinate taken at the same time as levothyroxine lowered how much levothyroxine was absorbed over 6 hours. NIH lists this interaction and says it might keep you from getting the full effect of the medicine.1,2,3
Reported in studies
Do not work out a gap on your own. Ask your pharmacist how to time chromium, or a multivitamin that contains it, around levothyroxine.
With insulin, metformin or other diabetes medicines, the issue is not the clock. NIH says chromium might add to their effect and raise the risk of low blood sugar, so ask your doctor before starting it at all.1,2

What’s in ours
- Men's Multi: Chromium, 120 mcg per serving, from the label
Our Men's Multi label says to take two capsules in the morning with a meal.
Questions people ask
Should I take chromium picolinate on an empty stomach?
We found no study showing that an empty stomach helps. The absorption study we cite gave chromium with a small meal, and the label of our Men's Multi says to take it with a meal.1,4
Can I take chromium with vitamin C?
Yes. NIH lists vitamin C among the things that increase how much chromium is absorbed.1
Is it better to split the dose?
Some trials split it between breakfast and dinner, and others gave it once a day. We found none that compared the two approaches, so either fits the research.1
