Quick answer
Ask your pharmacist or doctor before combining. NIH says zinc can bind two groups of antibiotics, quinolones such as ciprofloxacin and tetracyclines, so that less of both is absorbed, and their labels list zinc among the products that reduce absorption. These sources do not address other antibiotics, such as amoxicillin.1,2,3
Key facts
- NIH names quinolone and tetracycline antibiotics among the medicines zinc interacts with.4
- The ciprofloxacin and levofloxacin labels list multivitamins with zinc among products that lower the antibiotic's absorption.2,5
- The tetracycline label says preparations containing zinc impair its absorption.3
- Almost all multivitamin and mineral supplements contain zinc.1
Ask your pharmacist how far apart to take them
Quinolone antibiotics such as ciprofloxacin and levofloxacin, and tetracycline antibiotics such as tetracycline, can bind zinc in the gut, so less of both may be absorbed when they are taken close together. NIH advises taking them apart, and the ciprofloxacin, levofloxacin and tetracycline labels list zinc among the products that reduce absorption.1,2,3,4,5,6

What is documented
NIH's fact sheets say quinolone and tetracycline antibiotics might interact with zinc in the gut. If the two are taken at the same time, the body may absorb less of both the zinc and the antibiotic.1,4
For the antibiotic, less absorption means lower levels in the blood: the ciprofloxacin label says levels in blood and urine fall, and the levofloxacin label says they can end up considerably lower than desired. An antibiotic at lower levels may not work as well as intended.2,5
Which antibiotics this covers
Quinolones include ciprofloxacin and levofloxacin. Both labels name zinc, mostly as multivitamins that contain it, alongside iron, some antacids and other products.2,5
Tetracyclines include tetracycline and doxycycline. The tetracycline label names zinc. The doxycycline label read for this page lists antacids and iron but not zinc. NIH's warning covers the whole group, so treat doxycycline the same way and ask.3,4,7
Other groups, such as penicillins like amoxicillin, are not addressed by these sources. That is not a finding either way, so ask your pharmacist about your own antibiotic.
Why the spacing advice varies
Each source gives its own spacing, and they do not all match. The ciprofloxacin label, the levofloxacin label and NIH each set the gap differently, and MedlinePlus repeats the advice for ciprofloxacin in its own words.2,4,5,6
This page does not give a gap. Your pharmacist can tell you the one that fits your antibiotic and everything else you take.
What to ask your pharmacist
- Is my antibiotic a quinolone or a tetracycline?
- How far apart should I take it from zinc, a multivitamin, iron, calcium or antacids?
- Should I pause my zinc or multivitamin until the course ends?
- Does anything else I take, such as a drink mix or another supplement, contain zinc?
Bring the Supplement Facts panel of everything you take. Zinc is in almost every multivitamin and mineral supplement, so it is easy to miss.1
Questions people ask
Can I take a multivitamin with ciprofloxacin?
Ask your pharmacist first. The ciprofloxacin label names multivitamins with zinc, along with iron, calcium and some antacids, among products that lower the antibiotic's absorption.2,6
Can I take zinc with doxycycline?
Doxycycline is a tetracycline, a group NIH says interacts with zinc, even though the doxycycline label read for this page names iron and antacids rather than zinc. Ask your pharmacist how to take them.4,7
Does this apply to amoxicillin?
The sources on this page name quinolone and tetracycline antibiotics, not amoxicillin. Ask your pharmacist about your own antibiotic.4
