Quick answer
We found no official finding on resveratrol supplements in pregnancy. A 2019 systematic review of 31 animal studies found that maternal and fetal outcomes differed by species and pregnancy model, and the one human pregnancy study we found tested a product that combined resveratrol with inositols. Anyone who is pregnant should ask their doctor first.1,2
Key facts
- NIH's Office of Dietary Supplements says many supplements have not been well tested for safety in women who are pregnant or nursing, and to be cautious beyond a standard prenatal supplement.3
- A 2019 systematic review of 31 animal studies in rats, mice, macaques and sheep found that maternal and fetal outcomes differed by species and pregnancy model.1
- In rats, one high-purity trans-resveratrol product caused no adverse reproductive effects in an embryo-fetal toxicity study at 750 mg per kg of body weight a day.4
- The only human pregnancy study we found randomized 110 overweight pregnant women to a product that combined trans-resveratrol with inositols, and its abstract does not report side effects.2
What do NIH sources say about resveratrol in pregnancy?
NIH's Office of Dietary Supplements says to be cautious with dietary supplements, beyond a standard prenatal supplement, if you are pregnant or nursing, because many supplements have not been well tested for safety in pregnant women. That is general guidance, not a finding about resveratrol.3
NIH's LiverTox and LactMed databases both have resveratrol records, but the summaries we read do not speak to pregnancy, and NCCIH has no resveratrol page that we could find on October 11, 2026. So no official source we opened gives a finding on resveratrol supplements in pregnancy.5,6
What do animal studies of resveratrol in pregnancy show?
A 2019 systematic review found 31 studies of resveratrol given during pregnancy: 18 in rats, 7 in mice, 3 in Japanese macaques and 3 in sheep. The animals were in different models, such as maternal diet changes, diabetes, low oxygen and exposure to a harmful substance, and the doses and routes differed. Maternal and fetal outcomes varied with the species and the model, so the reviewers said further investigation is warranted and suggested a minimum set of data for future studies.1
A 2009 paper reported safety studies of one high-purity trans-resveratrol product in rats. It found no adverse effects in 28-day and 90-day studies at the doses tested, and no adverse reproductive effects in an embryo-fetal toxicity study at 750 mg per kg of body weight a day. The same paper reported chromosome damage in a human cell test that was not seen in a rat test. Animal results are not a safety finding for pregnant women, and doses per kilogram in rats cannot be compared directly with a capsule.4
Has resveratrol been tested in pregnant women?
We found one randomized pilot study. It assigned 110 overweight pregnant women to a product that combined trans-resveratrol with two inositols, to the inositols alone, or to a control group, for 30 and 60 days. Its abstract reports blood fat and glucose results. It says nothing about side effects or the babies, and because the product mixed ingredients, the effect of resveratrol alone cannot be separated.2
We did not find a trial designed to test the safety of resveratrol in pregnancy when we searched PubMed on October 11, 2026.
What about resveratrol skincare in pregnancy?
People also search for skincare serums and creams that contain resveratrol. None of the sources we opened addresses resveratrol applied to the skin in pregnancy, and the studies above concern resveratrol taken by mouth or given to animals. That is not a finding either way, so ask your doctor, midwife or dermatologist about the ingredient list of any skincare product.
Who should ask a doctor before using resveratrol during pregnancy?
- Anyone who is pregnant, before using a resveratrol supplement, because NIH says many supplements have not been well tested in pregnancy.3
- Anyone who takes a prescription medicine, because at 1 g a day for 4 weeks resveratrol slowed three liver enzymes that clear many medicines in healthy adults.7
- Anyone who takes a blood thinner, because NIH's LiverTox database lists a possible interaction with anticoagulants.5
- Anyone with liver problems.5
Bring the label of any supplement or skincare product you use, so your doctor can see the ingredients and amounts.3
