Quick answer
There is no single daily dose, because each enzyme has its own unit and is taken with a meal. Studied amounts include at least 4,500 FCC units of lactase with each dairy meal, 300 to 1,200 GalU of alpha-galactosidase with beans, and 280 mg of lipase before a high-fat meal.1,2,3
Key facts
- Enzyme powders are bulked with fillers and standardized by activity, so the milligrams on a label do not show strength.4
- Most adults who digest lactose poorly tolerate 12 to 15 g of lactose at a time, about one cup of milk.5
- Each studied amount below is a single serving with one meal, not a daily total.2,3,4
- No upper limit is set for enzyme supplements; the prescription pancrelipase label caps lipase at 10,000 units per kg of body weight a day.6
The amounts studied, enzyme by enzyme
| Enzyme | Amount per dose | Taken with | People studied |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lactase | At least 4,500 FCC units | Each meal that contains lactose | EU condition for a lactase claim |
| Alpha-galactosidase | 300 to 1,200 GalU | A meal of 420 g of cooked beans | 8 healthy volunteers |
| Microbial protease blend | 31,875 HUT | 25 g of pea protein in a drink | 24 healthy adults |
| Acid-resistant lipase | 280 mg | Just before a high-fat meal | 16 healthy volunteers |
A 31,875 HUT dose of a microbial protease blend was taken with 25 g of pea protein in a trial of 24 healthy adults.4
280 mg of acid-resistant lipase, in one capsule, was taken immediately before a high-fat meal in a trial of 16 healthy volunteers.3
Notice what the table does not contain: a figure for a whole blend. Each trial tested one enzyme, or one product, with one kind of meal. A daily count of capsules only makes sense once you know which meals the enzyme is meant for.2,4
Reading the units on a label
HUT, FCC units and GalU are laboratory measures of activity: how much of a test substance an enzyme breaks down under set conditions. Each enzyme has its own test, so the units cannot be added together or converted into milligrams.1,2,4
The protease preparations in the 2024 trial, for example, were mixed with potato dextrin or tapioca maltodextrin and standardized by HUT. Two products of the same weight can differ widely in activity, and a label that names an enzyme without a unit tells you nothing about how much of it is there.4
Lipase is the exception in the table: the fullness trial gave it by weight, as 280 mg of an acid-resistant form. Prescription enzymes, by contrast, are always dosed in lipase units.3,6
How much lactose before lactase matters
Most adults who digest lactose poorly tolerate 12 to 15 g of lactose at a time, about one cup of milk, according to a 2010 systematic review of 36 trials.5
That makes the size of the dairy serving part of the dose question. A splash of milk in coffee is far below 12 g of lactose; a large milkshake may not be. The EU minimum of 4,500 FCC units applies to each meal that contains lactose, not to the day as a whole.1,5
Our label against those amounts
What’s in ours
- Gut Health: DigeZyme, 100 mg per serving, from the label
Our Digestive Enzymes label gives one strength: 2,500 HUT of protease per capsule, with one capsule twice a day. That is about one thirteenth of the 31,875 HUT dose in the protease trial. The label gives no units for its lactase or alpha-galactosidase, so neither can be compared with the table, and we make no benefit claim for the product.4
Is there a maximum dose?
No tolerable upper intake level has been set for digestive enzyme supplements, so follow the label. For the prescription medicine pancrelipase, the label caps lipase at 2,500 units per kg of body weight per meal, or 10,000 units per kg a day, unless doctors investigate further, because higher doses have been linked to bowel injury.6
The same prescription label reports that doses above 6,000 lipase units per kg per meal have been linked to narrowing of the colon in children under 12. That is one reason a prescribed enzyme dose is never raised without a doctor, and why you should ask your doctor before adding a supplement on top of a prescribed enzyme.6
Questions people ask
How many digestive enzymes per day?
Follow the label of the product you use. The trials gave one serving with one meal, so the daily number depends on how many meals the enzyme is meant for. Our blend's label says one capsule twice a day.2,3
How many mg of digestive enzymes should I take?
Milligrams are the wrong measure for most enzymes, because preparations are standardized by activity and bulked with fillers. Look for activity units instead. The one enzyme in our table studied by weight was an acid-resistant lipase, at 280 mg just before a high-fat meal.3,4
