Quick answer
We found no study that compared times of day for cordyceps. Most exercise trials split the daily amount into three doses, one study gave 1 g just before hard cycling, and a trial described in a 2025 review gave an extract an hour before bed. The measured effects built over weeks.1,2,3,4
Key facts
- None of the trials we read compared morning with evening doses, or doses with and without food.1,2,5
- The trial in older adults spread about 1 g over three doses a day.1
- The only pre-exercise study gave 1 g of Cordyceps sinensis before a hard cycling session.3
- A trial in female wrestlers gave a cordyceps polysaccharide extract an hour before bed.4
How the trials timed their doses
Most exercise trials split the day's amount into three doses: 333 mg three times a day, or two capsules three times a day.1,2
Other trials gave cordyceps once a day: a fruit-juice drink for 8 weeks, and granules of a related species for 3 months.5,6
| Who, and for how long | Daily amount | When it was taken |
|---|---|---|
| Older adults, 12 weeks | About 1 g | 333 mg three times a day |
| Young adults, 1 to 3 weeks | About 4 g of a mushroom blend | Two capsules three times a day |
| Amateur marathon runners, 12 weeks | 2 g | 667 mg three times a day |
| Trained runners, 2 weeks | 3 g | Once a day, as powder mixed with stevia |
| Healthy adults, 8 weeks | A drink with at least 2.85 mg of cordycepin | Once a day |
| Adults, 3 months | 1.05 g of a related species | Once a day, as granules |
| Young adults, one session | 1 g | Before hard cycling |
| Female wrestlers, 3 weeks | 10 mg per kg of a polysaccharide extract | An hour before bed |
Split doses, one daily dose, a dose before exercise and a dose at bedtime have all been used, but no trial set one schedule against another. The schedule that matches most of the exercise research is three doses a day, taken every day for weeks.1,2,4
Before a workout
One crossover study gave 14 young adults 1 g of Cordyceps sinensis or placebo before a hard cycling session and took muscle samples over the next 24 hours.3
Compared with placebo, the muscle samples showed less build-up of cells around damaged fibers 3 hours after the session and an earlier rise in muscle stem cells. The study measured cells, not performance, so it cannot say whether a dose before training makes anyone faster or stronger.3
The performance trials gave cordyceps every day for weeks and tested people on separate days, so they say little about taking it right before exercise.1,2,7
At night
A Chinese trial in 40 female wrestlers, described in a 2025 review, gave a cordyceps polysaccharide extract an hour before bed for 3 weeks.4
That trial looked at antibody levels, not sleep. We found no cordyceps trial that measured sleep after an evening dose, and a 2025 review notes that mild complaints in mushroom trials, poor sleep among them, were not consistently recorded.4
In coffee, tea or a drink
One trial gave cordyceps as a drink made by blending Cordyceps militaris powder with fruit juice, once a day.5
We found no trial of cordyceps taken in coffee or tea. The drink trial is the only one we read that used a liquid, and it was taken once a day for 8 weeks.5
What's in ours
Timing and medicines
If you take a blood thinner, insulin or another medicine that lowers blood sugar, or one that suppresses the immune system, ask your doctor or pharmacist before adding cordyceps at any time of day. Laboratory and animal studies point to effects on platelets and blood sugar, and small trials found changes in immune cell activity.8,9,10
Questions people ask
Should I take cordyceps before a workout?
One small study gave 1 g before hard cycling and found different muscle cell responses afterwards, but it did not test performance. The trials that did test performance gave cordyceps daily for weeks.1,2,3
Can I take cordyceps at night?
One trial described in a 2025 review gave an extract an hour before bed for three weeks. We found no trial that measured sleep after evening doses.4
