Quick answer
Weeks to months. Skin trials ran 2 to 12 weeks, with larger hydration changes in those longer than 8 weeks; joint trials ran 12 weeks, and the nail and hair studies 24 weeks. Collagen amino acids reach their peak in the blood within about an hour of a dose.1,2,3,4
Key facts
- A 2021 skin analysis pointed to about 90 days of use.5
- In the one hair trial, skin elasticity differed from placebo at 12 weeks and hair diameter at 24 weeks.6
- The undenatured type II collagen trial ran 120 days.7
Within an hour: digestion
Essential amino acids peaked in the blood about 30 to 50 minutes after 20 g of collagen peptides taken on an empty stomach, and collagen amino acids such as glycine and proline peaked about 1 hour after gelatin in another study.4,8
Skin: 4 to 12 weeks
In the 2023 analysis of skin trials, which lasted 2 to 12 weeks, changes in skin hydration showed from 4 weeks and were larger in trials longer than 8 weeks.1
In the main 8-week trial of women aged 35 to 55, skin was measured at 4 and 8 weeks, and the difference from placebo was reported at the end.9
Joint comfort: about 12 weeks
A review of 15 trials of collagen with exercise concluded that its effects on joints and recovery appear after three months or longer of daily use.10
Of the two 12-week joint trials of collagen peptides, the one in active adults aged 18 to 30 found less discomfort during activity than placebo, and the one in adults with a median age of 63 found no difference.2,11
Does a bigger serving work faster?
No trial tested that. In the main skin trial, the 2.5 g and 5 g groups were measured on the same schedule and both differed from placebo by week 8, so the smaller amount was not slower in that trial.9
Tendons and training: 8 weeks or more
The training trials pooled in 2024 gave collagen daily for at least 8 weeks alongside regular exercise, and the tendon changes came from four small trials rated very low certainty.12
Hair and nails: about 24 weeks
Nails and hair grow slowly, and both studies ran 24 weeks. The nail study also checked again 4 weeks after people stopped.3,6
After you stop
In an 8-week skin trial of women aged 35 to 55, skin elasticity in the older women was still higher than with placebo 4 weeks after they stopped.9
The nail study checked people again 4 weeks after the last dose, and most were still rated better than at the start; it had no placebo group.3
No trial reviewed here followed people for long after stopping, so how long any change lasts is not known.3,9
Questions people ask
Can you see results from collagen in 2 weeks?
Unlikely. In the pooled skin trials, changes showed from 4 weeks and were larger after 8 weeks.1
How long does collagen take to work on hair?
The one hair trial ran 24 weeks and measured thicker hair at the end in women taking 1 g a day of a specialized fish peptide. No hair trial of standard collagen powder was found for this page.6
